Administrative and biographical history: The Women's Institute Movement in Britain started in 1915. The first WI in Britain was formed under the auspices of the Agricultural Organisation Society (AOS). Individual Institutes are self-governing and are grouped into county federations that make up The National Federation of Women's Institutes. Llanfair WI, Merionethshire, was active from 1921.
