Hanes bywgraffyddol/gweinyddol: In Wales there was no state system of education before 1870. The earliest surviving school records are the ones of the endowed grammar schools. These were founded by charitable bequests. Administrative records including teachers' salary registers may be found in the card catalogues for Monmoutshire Education Committee, School Boards, School Managers, and Divisional Executives. Newport was a separate education authority until 1974. Some records are relating to endowed grammar schools, charity schools, workhouse schools, prison education, the Monmouthshire reformatory, works schools, National and British schools, Roman Catholic schools, school attendance commitees, board schools, Monmouthshire Education Committee, Council schools, evacuated schools, and grammar schools. The places are Aberbeeg, Abercarn, Abergavenny, Abersychan, Abertillery, Bassaleg, Bedwas, Bedwellty, Bishton, Blackwood, Blaenavon, Blaina, Bryngwyn, Caerleon, Caerwent, Catbrook, Chepstow, Coed-y-paen, Croesyceiliog, Clydach, Cross Ash, Crumlin, Cwmbran, Cwmcarvan, Cwmtillery, Cwmyoy, Devauden, Earlswood, Ebbw Vale, Goytre, Gwehelog, Henllys, Itton, Llanarth, Llanddewi Rhydderch, Llandenny, Llandevaud, Llandogo, Llanelly, Llanfair Kilgedin, Llangattock Lingoed, Llangattock-Vibon-Avel, Llangwm, Llanhennock, Llanhilleth, Llanishen, Llanover, Llansoy, Llantilio Pertholey, Llantrisant, Llanvihangel Crucorney, Machen, Manmoel, Markham, Nantyglo, Nash, Newbridge, Newchurch West, Newport, New Tredegar, Norton Cross, Penallt, Penrhos, Peterstone, Pontllanfraith, Pontnewydd, Pontnewynydd, Pontymister, Pontypool, Pontywaun, Pwlldu, Raglan, Rassau, Redwick, Rhiwderin, Rhymney, Risca, Rockfield, Rogerstone, St. Brides Wentloog, St. Mellons, Sebastopol, Tintern, Tredegar, Tregare, Trelleck, Trevil, Troedrhiwgwair, Trostey, Tynewydd, Undy, Usk, Wattsville, Varteg, Whitebrook, Whitson, and Wyllie.
