CONTEXT
Administrative and biographical history: The Wynne family were established at Bodewryd by at least the 15th century. An early representative of the family, Gruffudd, married Angharad, daughter of Hwlkin ap Dafydd ap Ifan Wyddel of Bodowyr. The Boderwyd estate descended in the male line until Edward Wynne (d. 1755), Chancellor of Hereford. He married Ann, daughter and heiress of John Lloyd of Plas Einion, Denbighshire, but died without issue and the estate passed to Ann, his younger sister. She married Robert Owen of Penrhos Isa, Holyhead. The estate then passed to their grand-child Margaret Owen (1742-1816), heiress of Penrhos and Bodewryd. She married Sir John Thomas Stanley, Bart., of Alderley Park, Cheshire. Their son, Sir John Thomas Stanley (1760-1850) was created 1st Baron Stanley of Alderley in 1839. He was succeeded by his son Edward John Stanley, 2nd Bart (1807-1869) and by Henry Edward John Stanley, 3rd Bart (1827-1903).

Scope and content: Estate records and papers of the Wynne family of Bodewryd, Anglesey, including records of the Bodowyr estate (Bodedern), Anglesey, and Plas Einion estate, Denbighshire, and papers of the Owen family of Penrhos, Anglesey, including important Welsh literary manuscripts, legal manuscripts relating to civil and ecclesiastical law; the antiquarian collections of Edward Wynne, chancellor of Hereford, relating to Wales and to the diocese of Hereford, and part of the collection of Humphrey Humphreys, bishop of Bangor and later of Hereford (1648-1712); letters to Humphrey Humphreys, 1691-1709 (mainly 1705-1709); Wynne family correspondence, 1613-1816; legal papers, 17-18 cent., especially relating to a lengthy action between Chancellor Edward Wynne and the Mostyn estate following the purchase by Wynne of the Bodowyr estate, 1721-1746; estate, personal and household accounts, 1603-1753 (but mainly 18th cent.)and title deeds, [13 cent.]-1864.

System of arrangement: Arranged into three numbered sequences: letters (no's 1-1033) and deeds and documents (1034-2012), manuscripts (1-106) and deeds and miscellaneous papers (1-561). There is a gap in the numbers used by the deeds and documents, the catalogue jumping from no. 1099 to no. 2000.
