Administrative and biographical history: The National Savings Movement (1916-1978) existed to raise funds by general public subscription, particularly for purposes of military expenditure and aid to armed services personnel. During wartime this was partly achieved by fundraising campaigns organised nationally but carried out at a local level, such as "Warship week" and "Salute the soldier" week. Towns and villages could, for example, 'buy a spitfire' for the RAF in this way. These kinds of campaigns drew on the desire of the public to lend their support to helping their country in a patriotic sense, and to helping those fighting on their behalf.
