CONTEXT

Administrative and biographical history: The Cardiganshire County Council came into existence as a result of the provisions of the Local Government Act 1888, and the first county council election was held in January 1889. The county was responsible for health, housing, education, trading standards, planning, highways and social services. In 1974, the county was combined with Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire to became the county of Dyfed; Ceredigion District Council covered the area of old Cardiganshire, and continued many of its functions. In 1996, Dyfed and the District Councils were abolished, and Ceredigion County Council became the new unitary authority.
