CYD-DESTUN

Hanes bywgraffyddol/gweinyddol: The Thompson family originated in the English West Country, where they were members of the Society of Friends. In 1854, Charles Thompson (1815-1889) joined the firm of Spillers Milling, based in Bridgewater, Somerset. In the same year, the firm established a mill in Cardiff, Glamorgan, and in 1860, its head office was moved there. Charles Thompson had come to the town in 1857, setting up his home at Preswylfa, Llandaff; from 1864, he was chairman of the company, which had come almost entirely under Thompson control. He had several children, including James Pyke Thompson (1846-1897), Henry Woolcott Thompson (1848-1919), Charles Thompson (1851-1938) of Penhill Close, and Herbert Metford Thompson (1856-1939). James Pyke Thompson built Turner House Gallery in Penarth to display his art collection, and bequeathed it, with its contents, to Penarth Town Council. Subsequently it passed to the National Museum of Wales. He also made benefactions directly to the Museum, which has a Pyke Thompson gallery named in his honour. Herbert Metford Thompson, among his many activities, served as a city councillor and alderman, and, with his brother Charles, was instrumental in enabling the city to buy Llandaff Fields as an open space. Charles Thompson presented to the city Sir David's Field and the Dell adjoining it. Charles Thompson of Penhill Close married Honora Elizabeth Thompson (1857-1947), and their children included Jennifer Thompson (1885-1890), Haselden Thompson (1888-1977), Bernard Woolcott Thompson (1891-1970) and Eleanor Metford Thompson (1895-1974).
