Special Collections and Archives (SCOLAR) is located on the lower ground floor of the Arts and Social Studies Library, at the junction of Park Place, Corbett Road and Colum Road.
Parking
Disabled parking is available by appointment close to the Arts and Social Studies Library in the Aberconway car park which can be accessed from Colum Drive.
By Bus/Train
Special Collections and Archives is located 5 minutes walk from Cathays train station, which connects to Cardiff Central station. The bus station is located alongside Cardiff Central station, around 15-20 minutes walk away. The number 27 bus to Thornhill travels from stand D3 to Colum Road every 10 minutes.
Special Collections and Archives (SCOLAR) holds rare books, original manuscripts and archive materials. The collections include:
Monday-Friday 9am-5pm
A lift provides access to all floors of the library. There is an accessible toilet on the entrance floor. Low-level catalogue terminals are available. Staff will retrieve books from the shelves, please ask for assistance and magnifying glasses are available from the enquiry office.
SCOLAR has a 40 seat research room, microfilm digital scanners and ongoing exhibitions.
Food: The library has hot and cold drinks machines, and there are various nearby cafés selling a range of hot and cold food and drinks, please ask for details.
Toilets: There are toilet facilities in the library (including disabled toilets)
Shop: Stationary supplies are available for purchase within the library.
An appointment is necessary to view archives in SCOLAR. The historical book collections are available Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm.
Members of Cardiff University may access SCOLAR using their library card. Members of the public must bring a form of identification to the library, where a day pass will be issued.
Lockers are provided, no coins are required.
Staff can provide photocopies or high quality digital copies of archives, subject to copyright and providing this does not damage the document. Fees apply. Cameras can be used with permission, within the same guidelines. Published reproduction of the resources must have permission from the University Library, and must carry a suitable published acknowledgement.
Personal laptops are allowed, there are a number of tables which have power supply sockets. The search room has wi-fi.
Professional research assistance can be provided at £50 per hour.
