Denbighshire Record Office is located in The Old Gaol, Clwyd Street, Ruthin, which is in the town centre, just off the A494. It is well signposted.
From the A525 and A494: when approaching from the east, follow the A525 or A494 into Ruthin. At the roundabout take the second exit onto the A494, Park Road. Follow this around and Park Road car park is on the left, before the Texaco Garage. When approaching from the west, follow the A525 or A494 into Ruthin. If on the A525, at the junction turn left onto the A494, Park Road, and Park Road car park is on the right just after the Texaco Garage. If on the A494, at the junction turn right, still on the A494, and turn right over the bridge before the Texaco Garage. Cae Ddol car park is immediately on the right. Denbighshire Record Office is the large grey brick building by the river. The entrance is through an archway from Clwyd Street.
Parking
On-site parking is available for disabled drivers only. Pay & display parking is available a few minutes walk away at Cae Ddol or Park Road Car Park.
By Bus/train
There is no train station at Ruthin. The nearest train station is Rhyl. The bus station is outside County Hall which is a 5 minute walk from Denbighshire Record Office.
Denbighshire Record Office holds records relating to the geographic area of the former historic county and new county of Denbighshire including records of local authorities, parishes, chapels, families, individuals, businesses and institutions of all kinds.
Monday- CLOSED
Tuesday-Friday- 9.30am - 4.30pm
Last document orders are at 11.45am and 4.00pm
No documents will be produced between 12.00pm and 2.00pm unless they have been ordered before 11.45am
All public areas of Denbighshire Record Office are accessible to wheelchair users and there are disabled toilets.
Food: There is no facility to buy food on site but there are plenty of places to eat in town, the nearest of which are just a few minutes walk away.
Toilets: Public toilets are available on site
Shop: There is no shop at Denbighshire Record Office but publications may be bought at the office.
An appointment is not always necessary but you are advised to contact the Record Office if travelling any distance or wish to reserve a microfilm reader or computer for your use.
A Reader's Ticket (CARN - County Archive Research Network) is required for access to original material. If you do not have a ticket then you will need to bring proof of identity which includes your address and signature (eg driving licence).
Lockers are provided outside the searchroom. There is no charge.
Denbighshire Record Office offers a photocopying service, subject to the documents' physical condition and regulations regarding copyright, at 35p per A4, 60p per A3 and £2.50 for a scan. Prints from microfilm/fiche can be supplied at £1.00 a print out.
Use of cameras is permitted; there is a charge of 50p per image with a maximum allowance of 10 images a day.
A photographic service is also available at £2.50 per photograph.
Personal laptops are allowed, and power supply sockets for use with these are provided but limited.
A research service is available for those unable to visit the office. Charge is £21 per hour (minimum) and £9 per additional half hour. Research request should be on the official order form with a cheque or postal order made payable to Denbighshire County Council. Members of the Friends of the Clwyd Archives may have an initial half hour search for free.
There are no age restrictions, but children should be accompanied by a responsible adult, and visitors with very young children should make sure that other users of the record office are not disturbed.
