Finding us

From the A55 come off at the exit marked Corwen. At the roundabout take the road marked Hawarden and drive through Tinkersdale woods.  At the crossroads with memorial fountain drive straight across, between the Post Office and HSBC bank, into Rectory Lane and through the gates at the end. Car parking is down the slope to the right as you come through the gates.


From the A494 come off at Queensferry and from the roundabout take the exit marked Hawarden. Drive up a long hill to a Y junction, turn left and then left again into Rectory Lane between the Post Office and HSBC bank (as above).


Parking
A free car-park is provided for users of the Record Office. On passing through the double gates, turn immediately right. For disabled visitors, parking is available adjacent to the Record Office entrance down the left-hand side of the building beneath the arch.


By Bus/Train
Hawarden is on bus routes 4 and X44 between Chester and Mold, and route 11 between Chester and Rhyl. Get off the bus at the Glynne Arms in the village centre, turn down Rectory Lane (between the Post Office and HSBC bank) and through the gates at the end. The Old Rectory is in front of you and the Record Office is down the left-hand side at the far end of the building.


Hawarden station is on the Bidston-Wrexham line. Come out of the station, left up the slope to the main road and turn right. In the village centre, turn left down Rectory Lane.

Records Held

Flintshire Record Office holds documents, maps, photographs, books and newspapers, film and sound recordings &c. relating to the history of Flintshire, including records of: county, district and parish/community councils; quarter sessions; magistrates' courts; the Church in Wales and nonconformist churches; schools; poor law unions; hospitals; police; families and estates; businesses; clubs and societies; trades unions and many others.

 

Opening Times

Monday  - Tuesday: 10am - 4.30pm
Thursday - Friday: 10am - 4.30pm

Wednesday - CLOSED

 

Accessibility

There is disabled access to the public search-room and foyer.

 

Facilities        

Food: A refreshment area is provided in the foyer with a self-service facility for hot drinks. There are several pubs and cafés in the village.                                
Toilets: There is a public toilet accessible from the foyer.
Shop: Postcards, books, maps and prints published by the Record Office are available for sale in the search-room.

 

Appointments

Demand for places is high and it is advisable to reserve a place in advance of a visit. Ring the "enquiries and reservations" telephone number above.

 

Readers' Tickets

A County Archive Research Network reader's ticket (CARN) is required for access to original material. If you do not have a ticket you will need to bring proof of identity which includes your address and signature (eg driving licence).

 

Lockers

Lockers are provided in the foyer. No coins are required.

 

Copying and use of cameras

Photocopies can be provided at the discretion of search-room staff, taking into account copyright guidelines and the physical condition of the document. Scanning and digital photography are also available under the same conditions. Visitors wishing to use their own cameras should apply for a photography permit. Fees are payable for all these facilities.
Please note that it may not be possible to complete your copy order during your visit.

 

Use of laptops

Personal laptops are permitted and some tables have adjacent power supply sockets. Visitors wishing to use a laptop should make this clear when they book to ensure that a suitable table is reserved for them.

 

Research Service

Flintshire Record Office’s Research Service undertakes, for a fee, searches in

all sources held at the Record Office. These include printed and microform

sources such as directories, census and newspapers, as well as archive

collections.

The fee, including VAT and postage, is £25 per hour.

 

Children and young people

There is no lower age limit for use of the facilities. Those who do not have suitable proof of identity for a CARN ticket (see Readers' Tickets above), should ring in advance to discuss an appropriate alternative.
