    Project gets go ahead

After a successful application process Wrexham County Borough Council has achieved a Stage 2 pass from the Heritage Lottery Fund for Phase 1 of the Wrexham Community Heritage Project.

The grant of £950,000 will enable work to start on the £2.1 million project that will eventually transform the former police station in Regent Street to the premier museum facility for NE Wales.

    Phase 1 will include:

    • A new glazed extension on the front of the museum creating space for an improved reception area and museum shop, and a new coffee shop.

    • An interactive family friendly gallery focused on the history of Wrexham County Borough’s many communities.

    • A new gallery displaying collections from Amgueddfa Cymru National Museum Wales and the National Library of Wales.

    • A programme of events and activities designed to promote and widen access to the museum and to encourage more people to engage with their heritage.

Subsequent phases will see new exhibition galleries on the first floor, as well as an extended A.N. Palmer centre, a new archive store and new education suite.

Building work is expected to start at the end of 2009 with a re-opening about 12 months later.
